  1. This is your best bet if you want a truly world class skatepark that will appeal to all types and levels of skateboarding and be appealing to overseas skaters so they will want to turn up at any event it may host.

The bowls should have more than just transition – some should be large and vertical, or even better, over vert.

  2. We really need some BIG world class bowls. Auckland is filled with heaps of little street parks and parks with transitions only up to 5ft. We desperately need some vert bowls similar to Bondi in Australia or even more like the Oregan flow bowl style. Or else our younger generation will never be able to get to mix it up with the pros around the world.

  3. This type of park is what Auckland is sorely lacking. A good mix of both street and with a decent bowl. Could even put a cradle in the mix?

  4. This is a great design, but I agree even as a street skater that some bigger and deeper bowls are needed for those vert skaters who enjoy a challenge. Plus for the street side of things, some rails and boxes (not fun box) lower than others and some higher, for all the beginners who can’t quite ollie on to the higher ones, so everyone of all ages can enjoy skating there.

  5. David hit the nail right on the head! A bit of everything is the way to go. Get a world class facility on a par with the best facilities overseas and your skating ability will go through the roof! Anyone who wants to limit themselves, and others it would seem by other comments around the place, to JUST ONE style of skating needs their head read! Don’t believe the narrow-minded hype and selfish propaganda! Get variety & get some mad skills :)

  6. This is the skatepark for everyone. Bowl skaters, street skaters, inliners and the odd biker. A good mix of street and bowl gives a great choice of options for beginners, learners, intermediate and experienced no matter what their preference . A good skatepark isn’t just restricted to one format. The majority of international skateparks embrace the concept of bowl and street. It futureproofs the park for many generations and provides variety.

  8. Okay, everyone knows that the skateparks in America are amazing and much better than anything we have here. But building ones like theirs might be a little out of the price range right. However… If we copy an American skatepark exactly. It would save a ton of money in the planning and design phase. Therefore all money can go directly to the construction of the park.

-This would save a lot of money.
-The project would be finished much much sooner.
-We’d have a world class skatepark.

Get the community to vote on which skatepark they want.

    that’s my two cents.

  9. Bowls and Trannies are great but execution is key to a great park. These skate elements are not easy to construct and finish and most contractors cannot do the work. Even swimming pool contractors suck.

I helped run the skatepark project in Aspen Colorado 7 years back. A great bowls park, we were fortunate to hire Team Pain- skaters who build parks- to build that facility. These bros had their own tools (for shaping trannies) and would constantly grind-shape-ride the bowls/finish/copings til perfect.

Im not sure if there are similar contractors here in NZ but make sure you get good builders for this work. If there is only enough cash to hire the local concrete driveway man, then maybe go more towards a streets and plaza format that they can build!

  10. John King’s comment quite frankly shows a complete lack of understanding for what’s REALLY needed in skateboarding today!!! Are you a non-skating parent John? It sounds like it!

Quite simply put – “saving money” (have you seen the budget?) and getting things “finished much much sooner” is EXACTLY why we HAVEN’T ended up with “a world class skatepark” YET! Council – please don’t listen to this ill-informed dolt! It’s people like this that put money in the pockets of really bad contractors out to make a quick buck who stick PRE-FABRICATED RUBBISH skate parks (if you can call them that!) everywhere that are now all falling to pieces!!!

Alan, most certainly YES we have very well-qualified transition constructors in NZ! Look at the fantastic new WORLD CLASS pool in Christchurch – that is a thing of beauty as an example of a vert pool on a par with anything overseas. Also, for something smaller that’s ridden by good ALLROUND skaters with both street & tranny backgrounds check out the kidney bowl in Keri Downs Park, Papakura. Brilliant design again on a par with good US bowls (very rare in NZ!). Have seen some amazing sessions go down there by both old & young skaters! Pity it’s so far out!

So yep, this mixed kind of design is by far the best way to go. If it takes a little longer so be it – JUST BUILD IT RIGHT FOR ONCE! (and please don’t listen to (non-skating?) idiots who just want to save money & cut corners – that’d be like building a football field without goalposts or any grass!!!

  11. Hear! Hear! I totally agree with Grindos! Take your time & build something worth building! Well said mate ;)

Skate plazas = good for street skaters – boo..

    Don’t listen to the selfish!!!

  12. sounds like grindos is on the right track first things first you need someone capable of building a park at the top quality that it needs to be which will require a huge background in skateboarding and skateboard park construction not just joe bloggs cheapest contractor who has built a couple of parks to good N.Z quality as to grindos comment about christchurch park it is not to bad but i think if you look a little harder you will find more experienced designers an builders do not get me wrong it is a fun park an built up to a respectful standard. You only have one shot at this shoot for the top.Average contractor = inevitable failure if this occurs. design well my thoughts on this issue are 600,000 is a great budget for a park you can achieve a lot to satisfy the majority. infiltrator made a really valid point which i believe also is a huge factor to N.Z skateboarding small transitions an bad parks are restricting the youth in progression any kids that can skate really well here and are good enough to get backing to go to the states or even ozzy get a bit of a shock when they find out they can not skate all terrain as well as they may have thought a 13 foot pool brings your in head into check pretty quickly especially when you see a 14 year old kid shredding around it like he was born in it and can nollie flip a ten stair too and thats what N.Z is lacking in my opinion an it is only my opinion!!!BIG TRANNY AN owairaka super sized!!

  13. Whoa, relax there Grindos.
By the way I haven’t seen the budget, I naturally assumed it wouldn’t be that big considering the trend of previous Auckland skateparks.

Sure, I reckon SAVE money (not cut corners) in the design stage..
why spend a huge amount of money to design a park when we can just use the same designs as world class US parks? “on a par with good US bowls”

My comment was purely to state that if we save money in the design phase by copying a state of the art American park, the end result would still be world class, and we would be able to use the money saved to afford skilled, experienced contractors who know what they’re doing and won’t make a hash of it.

Plus, money saved could go towards more materials, to increase the scale of the skatepark, on par with the massive, rolling concrete spaces of paradise we see in most US parks.

Sorry if my comment came across the wrong way. I want this park to be the biggest, most badass skatepark it can be.

Putting money in the pockets of really bad contractors out to make a quick buck who stick PRE-FABRICATED RUBBISH skate parks everywhere that are now all falling to pieces is the complete opposite to what I want for the Barry Curtis park.

Ehh, I’m eighteen years old and have been skateboarding for ten years, I may be a little young and such, but I like to think I’m not an ill-informed dolt as you so harshly put it :)

I definitely agree with what you’re saying. I just wanted to clear up that little misunderstanding.

    Cheers, John.

  14. I think that a half n half design is sick. some stairs, ledges, drops and some qp’s, mini ramp and a bowl. it’s attractive to both street an terrain skaters.
Cant wait to see the final plan.

  15. I like this design. The half and half idea really is a very good design. If there was to be a good mix between street and transition it would definatly be very succesfull.

I very much like the design of the Street plaza. I think i like that alittle more than this one.

But on second though having both, if made and designed really well the half and half idea would be best.

  18. Good to see the Council been proactive in getting feed back and ideas..

They could save money buy getting the skaters and Bmxers and anyone else to help dig, I’d bring my spade and live in site for a month, if it meant more money for steel and concrete.

  19. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!!!!!!!!

The skatepark needs to be built by reputable park building company! Please no random independent concrete crews! even if they have done a park or two before.

There are only 2 crowds out there that are capable of building something thats
100% guaranteed to be a success. One company being Premium Skateparks. Look at Queenstown and Owairaka for example.

I cant stress how important it is to have one of theses companys take care of it. Or else we will be stuck with another Te pai or even worse another Otara park.

  20. i’m pleased to see that the general opinion is to have half bowl half street, i agree how important it is to the build of this park to make sure it is concreted perfectly. the queenstown park is an unreal finish and should be a platform for the quality of the park we want in our area, i look forward to the outcome …
